UC172 brings together two reclaimed materials with a strong sense of history: charred black tea wood beams and ochre bricks salvaged from an 18th-century building.
Iñigo Calleja’s design seeks to preserve the honesty and purity of these materials while giving them a distinctly contemporary sculptural form. The composition evokes the silhouette of an oversized vessel, with the bricks integrated into the curved wooden structure. Their contours have been carefully shaped to follow its flowing outline, while their flat faces retain the original colour variations and patina accumulated over more than two centuries.
The form rises towards a slender wooden top, whose perfectly smooth finish introduces a note of refinement without diminishing the strength of the materials beneath it.
Through the meeting of weathered surfaces and precise contemporary forms, UC172 transforms two recovered materials into a unique piece that balances material honesty with sculptural beauty.
