Someone offloaded a pair of wide French oak slabs — beautiful wood, but badly warped. Concave across their full width. The conventional approach would have been to flatten them, which would have consumed most of the thickness and left nothing worth working with.
AMBER saw the curve differently. A concave surface that wraps around you is not a defect — it is a backrest.
The result is a pair of throne-like seats: no armrests, no ornament, just a dramatically tall curved back and a base of two crossed rectangular planks. Minimal and physically imposing in the way that only large solid wood can be. Joining the crossed base to a concave surface required precise joinery on a curve — not a standard operation, but a satisfying one.
The base and the backs didn't match in colour. Rather than chase a perfect blend, AMBER burned both. The pieces unified into something darker and more coherent than the original wood had suggested.
Two seats that began as a material problem and became, in the end, exactly what the wood was always shaped to be.
