There is something about fire that absorbs us — makes us stare at it and lose all sense of the present.
This piece is fire.
Bricks reclaimed from an eighteenth-century building, fired in open flame and dried in the sun.
Ancient French oak beams, burned so the grain marks itself in black.
Red against black. More fire.
The challenge was to achieve a large, voluminous geometry without the weight and quantity of material becoming a problem. Natural materials are our passion, but everything passes through the filter of efficiency and function. And having spent considerable time in battles of crushing, mortaring and coating, the solution was to apply the same approach to this new material.
Iñigo had the folder full of sketches, as usual. The winning recipe: a red brick meteorite — 130 × 100 cm surface, cut in half to leave a flat face — resting 40 cm off the ground on a hand-sculpted oak wedge that wraps around it, seats it, and stops it from moving. An embrace of fire.
