There are architecture studios that build big houses. And there are studios that build houses you remember. The best studio in the province of Cádiz belongs to the second category — known for their mansions in Sotogrande and with projects around the world. What strikes you most when you encounter their work is not the scale — tennis courts, pools, multiple levels on a hillside, several kitchens — but that at that scale, the detail does not disappear: the precision of an auxiliary door joint is at the same level of sensitivity as the climate comfort of the vast living room.
To furnish their new homes they designed a two-metre-tall sculpture: an abstract human face on a steel pedestal, which they typically produce in stone. For this project they asked us to explore wood as an alternative material.
Our contribution started with the selection. Reclaimed ancient oak beams — very massive, wide grain, with abundant cracks we knew we could turn to our advantage to give the piece more character. The geometry is minimalist, and precisely for that reason every detail and every feature has to be perfect. There is nowhere to hide.
The result has the solidity of something conceived to last as long as the house it inhabits — an extraordinarily memorable villa that deserved an element to match.
