Some materials arrive in formats that create as many problems as they do possibilities. This iroko plank was almost five metres long and 130 cm wide. Difficult to transport, difficult to store, difficult to work with. It weighed around 400 kg.
But the thought of making a complete table from a single monolithic plank was something we had to try.
The structure was always going to be a dolmen — two supporting pillars and a top laid across them. This was about large, heavy things. We were not honouring any of the dead, but the megalithic form inspired us: the same primal logic of mass and balance that drove the people who raised those Neolithic stones.
The original designs were low-poly in spirit — straight sections, sharp edges, planes meeting at hard angles in different directions. When the piece was finished it didn't fully convince us. Without losing the connection to those stone forms, we softened it: smoother transitions, more approachable surfaces, and bas-relief details carved into the wood — rounded, exuberant forms that are unmistakably AMBER against the austerity of the overall structure.
UC78 was presented at MIAD 2024 in Madrid, where it received an exceptional response.
